Pull it all into one place – a conference (or classroom) feed

Netvibes is a tool I have played around with. See my public universe here. (screenshot below)

netvibes

I sometimes make a mistake with tools. The wood gets in the way of the trees and I start developing the use of something as an example (facility) for the whole school (see subject tabs at top of image). Big mistake.

The right (?) thing to do is to make use of it yourself for your own teaching. That then serves as an example to others of how it might be used.

I just saw this tweet:

lindseyb16: Netvibes Page for #blc09 info, http://is.gd/1NPoJ especially like the mobile site from november learning http://is.gd/1NPry.

If you check out the links you’ll see a netvibes mashup of pages bringing together all the information on one conference into one place. The BLC (Building Learning Communities) conference.

I was so impressed I wrote this post. Imagine how you could bring everybodys contributions into one space. Blogposts. Tweets. Facebook updates. Links. Relevant reading material. Widgets. Not all these things are happening in my classroom right now but I like the idea of pulling everything that everybody does into one space. You could have a different page for each topic or project. You could link to it from the subject/course homepage. It might be a bit tricky to get all the work going in feedable formats but if you’re using Google Apps then all work could be published and fed out to the netvibes page, even if via a social bookmarking tool.

Obviously this would be vulnerable to misuse and abuse, but it could moreover be a fantastic way of bringing cohesion to your teaching and learning.

LiveScribe. Good? Bad? Worth it! 24 June 2009

LiveScribe.

I bought a LiveScribe pen and dot paper that goes with it. Arrived yesterday. I was really excited about this *toy* because I have been looking for something that would put Maths onto my VLE and struggling to come up with the right answer (see earlier posts).

I bought a bundle with a couple of extra notebooks and nibs. £220.00. Not cheap. But if it works it will be an asset. If I can get other teachers using it then it becomes very cheap in the wider scheme of things.

Today I visited Felsted school by invitation from @nickdennis (Assistant Head) hosting the Haileybury ICT Meeting this year (HODs and technicians and Directors). @dajbelshaw was the keynote speaker presenting Open Source Schools. Continue reading…

Exam question in Moodle forum 03 April 2009

Exam question in Moodle forum

I set an 8 mark ICT question on a forum inside the course built for that A Level unit.

Students had 20 minutes to answer it.

Social networking is still in nappies 28 May 2009

Social networking is still in nappies

Today I received an email from a colleague who is writing her PhD thesis on literacy. Here is a passage from it:

I read a recent BECTA report that says only 5% of schools (don’t know if junior or senior) have used social networking as an educational tool. That makes what we have done with Reading Group innovative to say the very least. Why is this I wonder? Is it because of child protection issues? Yet you overcame those with the ning site by setting yourself up as the manager. Is it a lack of ICT skill on the part of the teachers? An NFER reports claims that 33% of teachers felt they lacked the technological skills in order to fully exploit the technology available to them in schools. What do you think? Continue reading…
